We are currently scheduling volunteers to serve in our traditional Volunteer Program. Opportunities are available for Fall Break (2023), Spring Break (2024), Fall Break (2024), and the Ultimate House Raising Challenge (please consult our Volunteer Coordinator for details), as well as at other times in the year depending on our schedule. We welcome College Mission Trips, Youth Mission Trips, Church Groups/Missions, Corporate Groups/Retreats, and Older Adult Groups/Missions. We also love having volunteer teams from local civic groups, businesses, churches, schools, and more! If your heart is willing and eager to serve, the families of Eastern Kentucky need you.

HDA’s new home construction and home repair projects are completed by our staff carpenters with local subcontractors, and we utilize volunteer labor for several key tasks, including:

New Home Construction

Subflooring & Framing
Roofing
Siding
Flooring & Trim
Insulating
Building Steps & Porches
Digging Footers / Laying Block
Painting
Site Development (grading, digging drains, landscaping, etc.)

Home Repair Projects

Home Rehabilitation/"Rehab"
Roof Replacement
Replacing Porches and Building Wheelchair Ramps
Bathroom Replacement
Installing New Flooring & Siding
Installing New Windows & Doors
Repairing Steps & Handrails
Widening Doorways & Installing Grab Bars
Interior & Exterior Painting

Locations

Volunteers work at sites throughout Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Perry Counties in East Kentucky. These counties are listed as “distressed” by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and have some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Most of our worksites are in remote areas, in mountain hollows, and on reclaimed mine lands. We also have worksites within the city limits of four mountain towns: Hazard, Hindman, Hyden, and Jackson.

Ongoing COVID-19 Precautions Since much of our work occurs outdoors, you are not required to wear a mask. When indoors (making repairs or doing interior work for New Home Construction), it is up to the individual as to whether he or she wears a mask or not. Most local businesses and restaurants in our area do not require being masked, but again, if you feel you need to wear one, please do! We do ask that you strongly consider being vaccinated prior to making the trip to Eastern Kentucky. NOTE: If you're signing up for Flood Recovery, you should get a tetanus vaccine before arriving to serve.

Requirements

Ages 14 & Up Preferred (Children younger than 14 are welcome to come along, but they must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.)
No construction experience necessary
Size of volunteer work crews is generally 5-7 individuals per site (depending on the overall size of your entire group, which can be 5 total or 30 or more; large groups are divided up into teams of 5-7 individuals)
Must provide your own transportation - cars and/or vans preferred; school buses are not allowed
Must submit all necessary forms and fees prior to beginning work

Service Dates

Volunteers are needed year-round. Please select the dates on which you wish to serve! Available dates are reserved on a first come, first served basis.

State & National Volunteer Groups arrive on Sunday afternoon; final work day is on Thursday of each week; groups get Friday as a free day. Our staff will match you to the project most appropriate for your group size and interests.

Local Volunteers are invited to serve during our annual volunteer & fundraising events. Workdays are Monday-Thursday. Local volunteers do not serve on Saturdays, unless it's during Community House Raising; however, some weekends might be available. Individuals and Groups pick their own start times and end times and can serve for a day, multiple days, or a whole week (M-Th), depending on our needs and the size of the project.
